Because microdermabrasion is gentle and pain free, it continues to be one of the most popular types of cosmetic skin treatments that you can get. It leaves skin feeling and looking soft, smooth and clear. The appearance of blemishes are less obvious with repeated microdermabrasion treatments, too.

This cosmetic skin treatment is pain free because it only scrapes off layers of skin that are already dead but which your body has yet to slough off naturally. This skin is no longer doing you any good so microdermabrasion treatments serve to rub all those dead cells off. Revealed below the dead layers is clear, radiant and living skin. This young skin is what looks best, tightest and cleanest.

Microdermabrasion works differently for everyone depending on their skin tone. Fairer skin is more sensitive and thus usually has better results than darker skin tones. Luckily, everyone can benefit from microdermabrasion it is just that the visible results will differ in strength.

Dermatologists use what they call the Fitzpatrick Skin Scale to categorize skin into different tones. This also helps them predict how well a particular person’s skin will look and react to treatments like microdermabrasion. There are six categories, starting with the whitest skin tons and getting darker from there.

The darker the skin tone, the higher on the Fitzpatrick Skin Scale it scores. Type 1 means your skin is very white and pale. You burn very easily when exposed to sun but even underneath a burn you don’t get tan at all. A Type 2 skin tone is still white. You can tan but it takes a long time, and you burn sometimes but not all the times. Type 3 on the Scale is a little darker in color but still white. This is the average Caucasian skin tone. You burn sometimes and can tan with little difficulty.

The last three types of skin tones listed on the Fitzpatrick Skin Scale are all dark skin tones. They start with Type 4, brown skin that doesn’t burn very often but tans readily. Type 5 is darker brown with less risk of burning and better chance of tanning. Type 6 is black skin that doesn’t burn at all.

Once again, this Scale is what dermatologists use to figure out how well different cosmetic skin treatments will take effect on your skin. For instance, there are some treatments that do better on darker skin tones than on lighter skin tones. Similarly, the way the health of the skin reacts to a treatment can be grouped by the Fitzpatrick Skin Scale. If you have very dark skin, you will get the best results with microdermabrasion by finding someone who has experience with darker skin tones.

Microdermabrasion is understandably popular. It is affordable, gentle and the results are easy to see. Wait a few months between each treatment for the best results. Your skin will feel fresher, cleaner and brighter as you continue treatments.
